Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms – viruses, bacteria, algae, fungi, slime molds, and protozoa. The methods used to study these minute and mostly unicellular organisms differ from those used in most other biological investigations. Madhesh Public Health Laboratory microbiology unit consist of three sections: Bacteriology Unit , Parasitology Unit, Mycology Unit.
- Bacteriology Unit
Bacteriology section performs isolation and characterization of clinically significant aerobic and anaerobic bacteriological testing of various specimens as well as for outbreak causing bacteria like Vibrio cholera. It also performs routine staining for various specimens such as Gram’s stain, Z-N staining for Acid fast bacilli. Along with these tests it also performs some serological tests like: Widal test, Leptospira Ag, Malaria Ag test.

2. Mycology Section
Mycology section performs routine yeast and mycelial isolation for common pathogens like Candida, Cryptococcus, Dermatophytes, etc. It also performs India ink preparation for Cryptococcus and KOH preparation for screening.
3. Parasitology Section
Parasitology is the study of three major groups of animals: parasitic protozoa, parasitic helminths (worms), and those arthropods that directly cause disease or act as vectors of various pathogens. The diagnostic Parasitology Laboratory offers a wide range of parasitological investigations for enteric parasites and blood parasites Lab performs routine laboratory testing on stool and urine specimens including microscopy, urine microalbumin estimation, etc. Test performed at parasitology section of MPPHL are listed below.
